Product Detail
EMG joined forces with the legendary Geezer Butler to craft the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass pickup sets. This Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bassist began working with EMG founder Rob Turner in 2011 to recreate the classic bass tones from Black Sabbath's early days. By 2013, as Geezer and Black Sabbath transitioned from the studio to touring, the key to achieving the classic Geezer tone was a passive pickup with a true vintage feel. To recapture Geezer's early Black Sabbath sound, EMG designed a new vintage-style passive P & PJ pickup with modern elements. The all-solderless P set uses Alnico V pole pieces and custom wound coils for the perfect punch and grit. The J (PJ set) features Alnico 5 poles and two custom wound split-coils, eliminating the noise and hum typical of 70s bass pickups. It delivers more power and volume than standard single-coil J pickups, creating a great balance between the P and the J. The result is the unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone with deep, tight lows, just like in hits like 'Iron Man', 'War Pigs', and 'Paranoid' from the 70s. As Geezer Butler said, 'I never felt comfortable lending my name to other pickups, but these have impressed me.'
Using this EMG GZR - P Signature bass pickup is straightforward. First, make sure your bass is turned off. Then, carefully install the pickup according to the standard installation guide for bass pickups. You can enjoy the amazing Geezer Butler - like tone right away. When it comes to maintenance, keep the pickup clean. You can use a soft, dry cloth to wipe it down regularly. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures or humidity as this might affect its performance. Also, be gentle when handling the pickup to prevent any physical damage. If you notice any issues with the sound, like unusual noise or reduced volume, check the connections first. If the problem persists, it might be a good idea to consult a professional guitar technician.
